The CBB M.S. is a two-year program requiring twelve one-credit Yale courses, along with required non-credit coursework in research ethics and the year-long research paper sequence. Students complete coursework across computational biology and biomedical informatics, biological and medical sciences, and related quantitative and informatics fields.
Required Coursework
- CB&B 7400, Introduction to Health Informatics
- CB&B 7520, Biomedical Data Science, Mining & Modeling, or CB&B 5750, Bioinformatics Applications in Biomedicine, as approved
The following are required but do not count toward the twelve course credits:
- CB&B 6010, Research Ethics
- CB&B 7140, Research Paper I
- CB&B 7150, Research Paper II
Students also complete approved CBB courses, biological or medical science courses, and courses in related areas such as computer science, mathematics, statistics and data science, and physics. Course plans are developed with the student’s academic adviser and must satisfy all CBB M.S. and Graduate School requirements.
Research Paper and Presentation
During the second year, each student completes an M.S. research project and writes a paper describing the work. Students present and defend the project in a seminar, responding to questions about the project, relevant coursework, and their track of study. The paper is evaluated by the student’s research supervisor and a second reader from the CBB faculty.
Students should select a research adviser by the end of the first year or by the end of the summer following the first year. The adviser should be a faculty member in Biomedical Informatics & Data Science (BIDS) or hold a CBB appointment. Choosing an adviser outside BIDS or CBB requires approval from the research paper course leadership.
Additional Academic Expectations
- Meet all Graduate School requirements for the two-year terminal M.S. degree.
- Maintain the academic standing and grading standards required by GSAS and the CBB M.S. program.
- Participate in advising and degree planning.
- Engage in CBB and BIDS seminars, research presentations, and other program activities as communicated by the program.
