The Yale Computational Biology and Biomedical Informatics (CBB) Master of Science Program is a full-time, two-year, on-campus graduate program that prepares students to apply computational biology, biomedical informatics, data science, and artificial intelligence to complex challenges in biology, medicine, and healthcare.
Students develop technical, coding, data-analysis, research, and communication skills through interdisciplinary coursework, hands-on research, and close faculty mentorship. The program brings together expertise from computer science, statistics, data science, informatics, biology, engineering, and medicine and prepares graduates for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, biomedical research, artificial intelligence, data science, government, and academic research. It also provides a strong foundation for students interested in pursuing Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or other advanced degrees.
Two Academic Tracks
bioinformatics trackThe Bioinformatics Track focuses on developing and applying computational and quantitative methods to understand biological systems, including genomics, proteomics, systems biology, and structural biology. Students develop strong foundations in algorithm design, bioinformatics, and mathematical modeling. |
biomedical informatics trackThe Biomedical Informatics Track emphasizes the use of informatics, data science, and artificial intelligence to manage, analyze, and model biomedical and clinical data. This work supports advances in healthcare, clinical decision-making, and precision medicine. |
Both tracks share foundational training in computational methods, informatics, data science, and interdisciplinary research while allowing students to tailor their coursework to their scientific interests and career goals.
Program Relationship to BBS
The terminal CBB M.S. is a standalone degree and is not part of Yale’s Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BBS) umbrella program. The CBB PhD program, by contrast, is part of BBS. CBB also awards an en-route master’s degree to eligible students who are enrolled in the CBB Ph.D. program; that en-route degree is distinct from the terminal CBB M.S. described on this page.
